HOISINGTON, Kan. – Sometimes one big quarter is enough for the win. Friday night the Hoisington girls did it early, outscoring Halstead 22-6 in the opening eight minutes en route to a 41-30 win. The Lady Cardinals are now winners of five of their last six games.

“The first quarter we were just shooting the ball extremely well,” said Hoisington coach Mandy Mason. “But we were getting great shots from ball penetration and kick outs. We were executing our offense pretty well. The second quarter rolled around and we weren’t hitting shots. Obviously when you start missing shots it makes things look a little ugly.”

Hoisington connected on its first three shots from the perimeter with two apiece from juniors Jordyn Boxberger and Addy Mason. The Lady Cards took an 11-0 lead just over three minutes into the game on a Mallory Mooney shot. Hoisington made nine of its first 12 shots from the floor to lead 22-6 after one quarter.

Then the proverbial wheel fell off. Hoisington made just one shot in the second quarter – a 3-pointer from Mason with 5:03 to play in the half. Halstead sophomore Dominique Schutte went to work with seven points and four rebounds in the frame, and freshman Dalaina Schutte added a trey to cut the gap to 25-16 by halftime.

The Dragons continued to chip away, getting an early third-quarter triple from Dominique Schutte for a 27-20 score. Coach Mason switched up defenses and the Cardinal lead ballooned back to 38-21.

“Defensively we struggled a little bit in the second quarter,” Mason said. “Halfway through the third we switched back to our zone and our girls played really well in our 3-2. We were able to contain them a little better.”

Hoisington’s offensive woes continued into the fourth quarter with no field goals in the final eight minutes. Senior Macy Hanzlick did her part with three free throws, a blocked shot, and three steals in the frame. That was enough to keep the Dragons at bay.

Dominique Schutte fired in 14 points to lead all players and also grabbed seven rebounds for Halstead. Dalaina Schutte scored her six points from the perimeter. Hanzlick finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, and a handful of blocks and steals for the Lady Cardinals. Boxberger scored eight of her 10 points in the opening quarter and notched a double-double with 10 rebounds. Addy Mason added 11 points for Hoisington.
