Macksville holds off St. John to win boys MWC title

ST. JOHN, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Macksville Mustangs defeated the St. John Tigers 41-36 to win the 2022 St. John Mid-Winter Classic.

Macksville’s Hector Gomez opened the scoring with a basket a minute into the game. St. John’s Marco Ibarra quickly tied the score up with two made free-throws. Gomez would score four more points and St. John’s Elijah Delp would add four points to tie the score up at 6-6 by the end of the first quarter.

Both teams kept up the tight defense in the second quarter. With two minutes to go, the score was tied again at 12-12. St. John took the lead thanks to a three-pointer from Conner Gillespie and a basket from Quade Smith in the last 20 seconds. The Tigers took a 17-12 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was the decisive quarter of the game. St. John grew their lead to 21-15 at the 5:28 mark. Preston Dunn scored a basket at 3:59 to make the score 23-18. Macksville began a 10-0 run for the rest of the quarter.

The Mustangs scored a total of 16 points in the third quarter that included four three-pointers. Two came from Alex Barron while Rogelio Ibarra and Alvara Ibarra each sank one.

At the end of the quarter, Macksville led 28-23.

The run ended 30 seconds into the fourth quarter when Elijah Delp hit a free throw. St. John clawed back and tied the game at 32 all with 3:54 to go. Alvara Ibarra hit his second three-pointer of the night giving the Mustangs the lead back at 2:52. Alex Barron sank another three to help keep the lead at 38-33 with 1:16 to go.

Elijah Delp hit a three-pointer with 24 seconds to go to make the score 40-36 Macksville. Alex Barron hit a free throw with 13 seconds left to keep the lead at five points. St. John tried two attempts at a three-pointer in the final seconds, but they did not fall. Macksville won 41-36.

Alex Barron led Macksville in scoring with 10 points. Ryan Kuckleman scored four points and was named the tournament MVP.

Elijah Delp led St. John in scoring with 11 points. Conner Gillespie scored nine points off of three three-pointers all coming in the second quarter.
