Wellington outlasts Clearwater in overtime
CLEARWATER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A back and forth contest needed an extra four minutes to decide, with Wellington coming out on top of Clearwater in overtime 50-46 Friday night to stay perfect.
The Crusaders built an early lead, but the Indians chipped away to take a three point lead late in the first half before it was tied at the break. The third quarter saw neither team go up by more than a possession, but Wellington down three to start the fourth went on an 8-1 run to go back up, extending their lead by as much as 5 at 39-34. Airalyn Frame started what would be a huge final 12 minutes for her with both an and-one and a three in to build up their advantage. That lead withered away however, with Clearwater scoring the final five points of the quarter including a Carli Carlson three with 2 minutes to go that leveled it at 39, that score holding through regulation.
In the extra period Clearwater extended their run to 8 straight points, but Wellington’s Frame proved to be too much from the foul line, drawing a pair of shooting fouls along with a technical as she hit 6 of her 11 second half foul shots in overtime to seal the win. She finished with a game best 19 points, 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. Valerie Norwood was right behind her with 14 for the game.
The Crusaders now sit at 9-0 on the season, and hold their spot atop of AVCTL-IV ahead of a game with Winfield Tuesday night. Clearwater falls to 5-2 with the loss, and will look to bounce back against El Dorado.
