Ellinwood girls mount huge comeback to down Macksville
ELLINWOOD, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Ellinwood Lady Eagles overcame a 19 point deficit to win 65-55 over the Macksville Lady Mustangs.
Macksville scored the first bucket of the game. Then both sides went cold and could not score again until almost three minutes left in the first quarter when Ellinwood tied it at two-all.
Mayce Russell hit two three-pointers to help the Lady Mustangs to a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Mustangs doubled up Ellinwood in the second quarter scoring 22 more points to the Lady Eagles 11 points. Russell added another three-pointer while Abi Ibarra and Joselin Garcia each sank two treys.
Macksville took a 36 to 19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The third quarter was the opposite of the second. Ellinwood’s offense came alive and dropped 24 points while holding Macksville to just 13. Brittany Simpson scored nine points in the quarter via a three-pointer, two field goals, and two free throws.
The Lady Mustangs still clung to a 49 to 43 at the end of the third quarter.
Forty seconds into the last quarter, Ellinwoods Mary Dimitt hit a three-pointer to narrow the lead to only three. Then a minute later, Brittany Simpson makes a layup at the basket and is fouled. She sank the free-throw to tie the game at 49.
Shortly after the score was tied, Macksville’s Macy Russell fell to the court while trying to break the Lady Eagle press. She was helped off the court while hardly putting weight on her right leg. She did not return to the game.
With 6:14 left on the clock, Mary Dimitt was fouled. She made both shots on the one-and-one to give Ellinwood a 51-49 lead. The lead quickly grew to five within thirty seconds.
Macksville tried to come back, but they only scored six points the entire quarter. Ellinwood put up a total of 22 points. Mary Dimitt made three three-pointers and a field goal in the fourth quarter to record all but two of her 11 points.
Ellinwood scored a total of 46 points in the second half to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Brittany Simpson led all scorers with 25 points. Bella Baker added 14 points. Mary Dimmitt scored 13. Gracie Schlessiger contributed 10 to the total.
For Macksville, Kambry Adams led the team with 15 points. Mayce Russell scored 14. Abi Ibarra added 11 points including three three-pointers.
The Lady Mustangs scored 10 two-point field goals and 10 three-pointers.
