Newton’s Tournament of Champions, the annual wrestling showdown that teams across the state look forward to every season, has officially expanded to include a day of girls dual wrestling. This six team dual tournament on Thursday kicked off the weekend of TOC action.

Newton junior wrestler Jaymie Murry said, “TOC for the boys is such a huge deal and although this is a dual tournament, I’m hoping next year we can do a regular TOC where everyone is wrestling and you can place and we can do that stuff. So hopefully we just keep growing the program and keep advancing us more.”

“Wrestled some schools we haven’t wrestled yet as a team and so far we did pretty good,” said Garden City leader, junior Belle Hernandez. “I’m really proud of all the girls on our team, we all did pretty good and I’m just happy to be here and it’s just a good feeling to be out here.”

Defending state champs Washburn Rural went undefeated in the six team dual bracket to win the first ever girls TOC title.

Boasting about finally being able to compete in her home turf’s TOC showdown, Murray said, “It’s awesome. We get to see the boys do it all the time and it’s so great to have that pride that, ‘Yeah this is my home team, you all came here to wrestle,’ and it’s fun, it was a good day, kicked some butt.”

Boys TOC wrestling begins Friday morning at 9 o’clock at Newton High School.
