Maize fends off Andover in mid-season battle
Maize tops Andover on the road
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A back and forth affair between the Maize and Andover would see the Eagles hand the Trojans their first home loss in the last few seasons. The game not decided until the closing seconds as Maize prevailed 44-40.
Both teams put their athleticism on display early in the contest as the first quarter was littered with high-flying dunks. Maize’s Kyle Grill threw down two of his own, while Andover’s BJ Redic ended a 9-0 Eagle run with a steal and slam to his credit.
The second quarter was near dormant in scoring for both teams, each only adding a few to their game total. Andover would come alive after intermission and outscore Maize 16-4 in the third quarter. Maize would respond with a run of its own seeing the final period of play lean 21-10 in their favor.
Avery Johnson paced Maize with a game-high 13 points, followed by Jaden Gustafson with 10. Senior Sam Schmidt would score all of his 8 points in the 4th quarter for Maize. Schmidt would sink three lay-ups on strong cuts to the basket in consecutive plays down the stretch. Schmidt, while coming up big for the Eagles was quick to give credit to his teammates.
“It was pretty fun,” Schmidt shared. “It wasn’t just me, it was my teammates. They got me the ball when I cut and if they didn’t pass it, it wouldn’t have happened. They were all good passes,” he finished.
Maize rebounds from a tough loss to Salina South, Schmidt adds this was a big win for the Eagles when they needed it.
“It was big. It was a hard loss against Salina South, so we had to get our minds right for this one and I think we did,” Schmidt finished.
Maize Head Coach Chris Grill agreed with the sentiment.
“I don’t think we played our best basketball the other night, and I thought Salina South a really good game. Tonight, bouncing back after we weren’t at our very best, I think that was good. This was a struggle, it didn’t come easy and we had to fight for everything,” Grill noted.
