WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Trailing by nine points at halftime would not be enough to deter Andover Central as the Jaguars mounted a second half comeback against Goddard, winning 46-40.

The win comes on a night where the Jaguars showed support for head softball coach Rita Frakes who is battling cancer again. The win and the way it occurred resonated with Central senior Ellie Stearns, who finished with a game high 25 points.

“She is one of everyone’s favorite teachers,” Stearns noted. “She does so much for all of us inside and outside of school, she is everyone’s favorite. We really needed that win for her,” she ended.

Stearns and the Jaguars would find themselves trailing the Lions before a back and forth battle to close the game.

One main reason the Jaguars were able to take the lead was thanks to the play of Goddard’s leader, Maycee James. Starring opposite of Stearns, James poured in a team high 23 points on the night. Her performance mixed with tough shots and complex passing would lead the Lions in the matchup.

Stearns would will the Jaguars back with a 6 made three-point baskets on the night, four of which came after intermission. When asked about the turnaround, Stearns said she knew her team would look to her for a spark.

“I knew I needed to lead my team to that victory. Our motto this year is one step further, I knew I needed to be that leader to help my team get the win,” she shared.

Goddard suffers its first loss on the season, they’ll look to rebound in a rivalry game against Eisenhower next week.

Andover Central rises to 5-1 on the year and will look to keep the win streak going against Ark City.
