WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - At matchup between two current state championship teams, 2A State champs Sterling girls traveling to Cheney to take on the 3A state champs in a physical showdown that resulted in a 61-50 win for the Black Bears.

“We knew they were going to be a very good team, lots of offensive threats obviously,” said Sterling head coach Jill Rowland. “Brynn McCormick was probably our biggest concern, she’s a great shooter, great ball player and so we wanted to shut her down, that was part of it and we knew they had some nice bigs inside. They matched us in size or are a little bit bigger, so we needed to rebound or have some toughness, I think.”

“Cheney is a very good team, our coaches did a great job preparing us for the game, we knew we had to come out, get rebounds,” said Sterling senior Kali Briar.

“We hit some outside shots and kind of loosened things up for our post players as well. So, big boards and defense has kind of been our focus,” said Rowland.

Briar led the Black Bears with 19 total points while Bennie Horsch had 17 points. Olivia Albers added 18 points for the Cardinals. Sterling girls remain undefeated following the 11-point win over Cheney as both teams head into winter break.
