Derby’s defense dominates Goddard Eisenhower
Derby stops Eisenhower in second half
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Derby Panther girl’s basketball team has been on a roll to open the season, with defense being an emphasis for this unit. The Panthers follow up a dominant performance with another outstanding showing over Goddard Eisenhower, 47-21.
“They relish in the idea of shutting people down,” shared Panther head coach Dan Harrison. “They have adopted the attitude of together we can, and we are going to. That is hard to stop,” he finished.
Harrison noting the impressive defensive performance that saw the Panthers only allow 5 points in the entire second half of play.
The opening minutes of this game seemed to belong to Goddard Eisenhower, the Tigers beginning the game on a run, building a lead that at one point found Derby trailing 10-5. Derby junior Addy Brown was the spark this team needed in the opening frame, willing her unit to action.
“I call her the finisher, she is going to finish,” Harrison spoke of Brown. “With her it is either lead, follow or get out of my way, she’s that type of positive person and she has that confidence and she can make all of the plays,” Harrison explained.
Brown spoke highly of the turnaround this team was able to find after halftime on defense, saying the team was disappointed with the start.
“We started off really bad defensively, it was embarrassing, and that was the first thing we talked about when we went into the locker room,” Brown shared. “We all love defense because we know it leads to offense at the end of the day and once we picked that up it was better for us as a team,” she finished.
Brown finished the contest with a game-high 16 points followed by Naomi Brown with 8. Tatum Boettjer and Destiny Smith would each add 6.
Emilee Hollinger finished with a team-high 6 points for the Tigers.
