WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Coming off of a MIAA championship season, Fort Hays State women’s basketball is still sitting at the top of Division II basketball, according to national polls.

For the seventh time in team history, the Tigers are 7-0. Currently the top D2 women’s basketball team in the country, Fort Hays State is undefeated and led by a lot of experience.

FHSU head coach Tony Hobson said, “With the covid year, you have an opportunity for all these players to come back if they wished and most of ours did.”

“I think we have a lot of team chemistry and that came from last year and we’re just continuing to build on that,” said senior guard Jaden Hobbs.

With all of that returning experience, you wouldn’t think depth would be an early concern for coach Tony Hobson.

“We were a little thin to start the season because I had four players injured, three of them starters,” said Hobson. “So, the depth we had then, still was enough to win the games early in the year. I wouldn’t have wanted to play the whole year like that.”

Sophomore guard Katie Wagner said, “We’re getting everyone back, which is good, all the pieces to the puzzle. We just have to keep winning.”

“All of us are threats and any person can go off any night. So, it’s definitely hard for opposing teams to scout and to guard and I think all of that kind of counts into success,” said Hobbs.

That success has put a target on the Tigers, creating a little pressure as every opponent will look to knock them off the top.

“Our conference is really hard, so every game is going to be a challenge, everybody is going to want to beat us,” said Wagner. “So, I think we’re going to get every body’s best.”
