Salina Central dominates South in season opener
SALINA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Salina Central opened the season dominating rival Salina South 53-24 in the Mayors Cup.
“There will always be jitters before a rival game and the first game of the season, but we were ready to play,” Salina Central Head Coach Chris Fear said. “Defensively, this was one of the better games we’ve played since I’ve been here. We were connected and we didn’t give up anything easy.”
The Mustangs took a 35-15 lead at the break, and dominated defensively in the second half, holding the Cougars to just nine points.
“I thought they only scored when we deflected balls and they got it and knocked a few in,” Fear said. “That is what I was pleased with, the defensive effort was consistent and we talked about it before the game and they carried it out.”
The Mustangs were led by senior Aubrie Kierscht in scoring, who finished with a game high 15 points.
“It was a good way to start the season,” Kierscht, a Navy commit, said. “Obviously we got a lot to improve on but it was a good start to the year.”
Salina Central will face Eisenhower next while Salina South with take on Buhler.
