Maize holds off late Kapaun rally in showdown
Maize and Kapaun Mt Carmel round out day two of GWAL/AVCTL challenge
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The last game of night two of the AVCTL/GWAL challenge may have proved to be the best matchup of the series so far, and will be hard to top. Maize was able to hold off a late Kapaun run to win 48-43.
The opening minutes of the game matched the atmosphere inside Koch Arena. Maize rallied in the early goings thanks to the play from a number of players including Avery Johnson and Kyle Grill. The latter had the hot hand early on, scoring the first few buckets of the game for the Eagles.
Henry Thengvall starred opposite of the Maize attack in the early goings of the contest, finding his way to the rim and finishing tough plays. Other Crusaders would find their footing as the game progressed. Will Anciaux scored 14 of his game-high 17 in the second half of play.
Grill would lead the Eagles the distance, fending off a late game push that would see the Crusaders take the lead with less than a minute to go before the Eagles went on a late run to secure the win. He poured in 14 points followed by Johnson’s efforts with 9.
Thengvall trailed Anciaux, scoring 13 points in the outing, William Thengvall added four to the final tally.
