PHOTOS: Mulvane outlasts McPherson 18-16
MULVANE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Mason Ellis scored three touchdowns Friday for Mulvane, enough to push the Wildcats past McPherson for a second time this season, 18-16.
Ellis scored twice on 1 yard keepers in the first half to give Mulvane a 12-0 halftime lead, part of a day where he rushed for 116 yards. Mac nearly put points on the board before hitting the locker room but just missed a 36 yard field goal to keep a zero on the board. Ellin would go through the air, hitting Ian Comer for an 11 yard score early in the 4th quarter to extend it to an 18-0 lead, but for a third time could not convert the point after.
The ‘Cats held the Bullpups off the board for 58 minutes before Hunter Alvord found Trey Buckbee for a 42 yard score to cut the deficit to 10. After a Mulvane fumble, Mac again went to work quick, adding a second touchdown in a 61 second span on a Jaytin Gumm rushing score. The two-point try again was good, cutting the score to 18-16 with that missed field goal looming large.
The Pups then went for the onside kick, but Mulvane recovered it and kneeled out the game from there to advance to the Sectional round where they will take on Buhler.
Ellis finished with 116 yards on the ground and the 2 scores along with 55 yards passing. Gumm led Mac with 102 rush yards while Alvord passed for 207.
