Derby tops Wichita East in regional matchup
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A battle between the final two Wichita-area teams in pursuit of a 6A title would fall to the Derby Panthers 63-26 over the Wichita East Aces.
Derby’s defense would make a strong opening statement when Roman Boden came away with an interception on the second play of the game, halting what had potential to be a solid drive for the Aces.
On the night, the defense would do it’s best to contain an explosive East offense, led by sophomore quarterback Daeonte Mitchell and his most reliable target Caquoy Patterson. The duo would combine for two first half scores. Justin Bell was also a staple in the East attack breaking of decent runs to help move the chains.
Outside of the two early scores the Derby defense had the Aces bottled up, earning possession of the ball time and time again.
The Panthers offense steamrolled its opposition scoring early and often in several ways. Derby went to the air to gain field position on its opening drive before trusting in the legs of Dylan Edwards. The junior standout found the end zone a on numerous occasions including a 61-yard run and 65-yard punt return score.
Derby would continue to pour on more points in the second half, forcing a running clock to get the win.
The Panthers advance to the sectional round of the playoff against Lawrence Free State.
