Collegiate advances with 23-8 win over Pratt
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - In a defensive battle between Pratt and Collegiate, the Spartans came out on top with a 23-8 win to advance to the second round of the 3A playoffs Friday night.
“I am really proud of this team, we had a battle tonight. Pratt is a physical team and we are banged up after Andale last week,” Collegiate Head Coach Troy Black said. “We battled with a goal line stand at the end then turned around and drove 80 plus yards.”
Both teams were slow to start offensively, with Pratt holding Collegiate to just a field goal with 5:35 left in the first quarter.
It would be the Spartans defense that would score first for Collegiate, with Ashtun Villagomez recovering a fumble for a touchdown to give the Spartans a 10-0 lead with 8:07 to go in the half.
“Defensively we executed our game plan well, “Villagomez said. “Last week against Andale made us play with a lot of physicality, I like how we came out to play tonight.”
Collegiate would add on another field goal to take a 13-0 lead at the half, but Pratt would come out of the break and score first, successfully converting on its two point attempt to cut the deficit to five.
With 7:28 to play in the game, junior quarterback Wesley Fair would score on a 42-yard run to give Collegiate a 20-8 lead.
“Our defense did what we do best, which is stop them and it gave us momentum to roll down and score on offense,” Fair said.
After getting a big stop on fourth and goal, the Spartans put together a late drive to kick a field goal in the final three minutes to take a 23-8 lead.
Collegiate will face Cheney next on the road.
With the loss, Pratt ends its season at 6-3.
