WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Hutchinson punched hard and early, but Bishop Carroll countered, and a late surge led the Golden Eagles to an overtime win in the opening round of the high school football playoffs, 31-28.

Carroll scored the game tying touchdown with :01 left in the 4th quarter when Chase Smarsh hit Matt Holthusen for a touchdown. On that same drive, Bishop Carroll converted a 4th and 17, when Timothy Helten made an unbelievable catch on a Smarsh heave. Hutch fumbled on its opening overtime possession, trying to convert a 4th down. Carroll then moved down the field for a Michael Polley chip shot field goal to win it.

Much like last week, when Carroll lost to Wichita East, the Eagles got off to a slow start. Twice early in the game, the Salthawks forced turnovers on downs. Both times, Hutch turned those big defensive plays into touchdowns, and the Salthawks led 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter. But Carroll battled back, eventually tying it at 21 heading into the 4th quarter. Both teams added a touchdown to force the overtime.

With the win, Bishop Carroll travels to Maize for Regionals next week.
