Chaparral advances in playoffs with win over Marion
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Marion and Chaparral having their best football seasons in years as they faced off in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
Chaparral was undefeated all season long before it dropped its last game to Kingman, finishing the regular season with a 7-1 record. Marion on the other hand came into the first round of these playoffs as the District five third seed with a 5-3 record.
Jumping out to the second inning, Jack Lanning on the quarterback keeper. He rolled outside and took it all the way down the sideline and into the endzone to put Marion in the board first, 6-0.
The Roadrunners answered back quickly, Austin Clark got the handoff and he shook off a couple defenders to open up some smooth sailing down the field to even the game at 6-6.
The screen pass to Kaden Harding led him up the middle to take it in for the short score. Chaparral went up 12-6.
But right before halftime, Lanning rolled out and launched it down the field to Chance Shults in the endzone. The Warriors took a 14-12 lead into the locker room after the 2-point conversion.
Starting off the second half, Wyatt Drouhard found Alec Pfaff who plowed through defenders and fought his way in for the touchdown. The Runners took a 20-14 lead.
Another passing touchdown, this time to Jackson Swartz. The pass hitting him in stride as he glides into the endzone to boost Chaparral’s lead even more, 26-14.
Carson Gates coming through for his team with a tackle on fourth down when Marion was on the 2-yard line looking to rally back. No gain on the play, it stopped the Warriors in the redzone and turned over on downs.
The Roadrunners won 34-14 and kept the Warriors off the board the entire second half.
In the second round of playoffs, Chaparral will face the winner of the Douglass/Hillsboro game on Friday night.
