Cheney tops Pratt in battle of unbeatens
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - In a week five matchup between two undefeated and top ten ranked teams in class 3A, Cheney took down Pratt 27-14 to move on to 5-0 on the season.
“I couldn’t be more happy, Pratt is a good team and we worked hard this week preparing for this team,” Cheney Quarterback Harrison Voth said. “It was a good week of practice and all of our dedication paid off tonight, there is no better feeling than winning on a Friday night like this.”
The Cardinals would jump out to a 14-0 lead with back-to- back touchdown passes from senior quarterback Harrison Voth to senior wideout Luke Grace.
Pratt responded in the second quarter with a touchdown drive capped off by a rushing touchdown from Johnny Martinez, but would fail to convert on the two-point attempt.
With less than two minutes to go in the half, Voth would connect with Grace once again in the end zone to take a 21-6 lead at the break.
“Harrison is one of the best quarterbacks in the state,” Cheney Head Coach Shelby Wehrman said. “Some of the reads he sees and what he does, I don’t know how he does it. He is hard to get a hold of and he scrambles. He doesn’t give up on a play and I thought he did a great job leading our team.”
Cheney would add on another score in the third quarter, and Pratt would be unable to find an answer until the final two minutes of the game when the Greenbacks blocked a punt that would set them up deep in Cardinal territory.
Pratt capitalized, scoring on a short rushing touchdown from Enoch Walton. The Greenbacks would convert on the two point attempt, cutting their deficit to 27-14 in the final seconds of the game.
“I saw a lot of fight, determination and grit tonight and that is what I was really proud of,” Wehrman said. “I knew they would hit us in the mouth tonight and they are a very physical team. We kept hitting back and never gave up.”
Cheney faces Holcomb (4-1) on the road next.
With the loss, Pratt drops to 4-1 and will face Hugoton next.
