Derby outlasts Bishop Carroll in shootout
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A week three matchup between two of the state’s powerhouse programs exceeded expectations, with 6A #1 Derby holding on to top 5A #3 Bishop Carroll 44-36.
With the win, the Panthers move on to 2-0 on the season.
Bishop Carroll would strike first after forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff, settling with a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
Derby would respond with two straight scores off quarterback keeps from Mason Thatcher to take a 13-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles answered, with quarterback Chase Smarsh connecting with Matthew Holthusen on a 41-yard touchdown catch and run to cut Carroll’s deficit to 13-10 late in the first quarter.
But Derby’s Dylan Edwards would add on a quick two scores, first a 91-yard kickoff return then a 63-yard touchdown run to put the Panthers back on top big, 27-10 a minute into the second quarter.
The Golden Eagles once again found a response, with a huge kick return of their own from Matt Holthusen. Carroll ended the scoring drive with Smarsh finding Tate Blasi in the end zone for the 4-yard touchdown to make it 27-17.
Derby would add on two more scores before the half, one off of a pick six from Kaden Shelton, but with less than a minute to play Bishop Carroll would make it a 41-23 game at the break after Chase Smarsh connected with Blasi once again for his second touchdown of the half.
The Golden Eagles would hold Derby to just three points in the second half and score 19 straight, but fell just short of pulling off the upset.
Derby will face Salina South on the road next. With the loss, Bishop Carroll drops to 2-1 and travels to Dodge City.
