LA CROSSE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Victoria Knights opened their 2021 season with a 52 to 26 victory over the LaCrosse Leopards.

The game took place an hour earlier due to the threat of severe weather later in the evening.

LaCrosse took the field for their second year as an Eight-Man team. They hosted fellow Central Prairie League squad, the Victoria Knights.

The Leopards won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball. On the second play from scrimmage, Colby Stull ran for 48-yards to score the first points of the season. LaCrosse missed the two-point conversion.

The Knights took ten plays to tie the score. Grant Schoenrock threw an 18-yard pass to Seth Schwien for their first touchdown of the season. Lane Schmidtberger rushed for the two-point conversion. Victoria took the lead 8 to 6.

LaCrosse received the next kickoff and began to march down the field. Bryce Conner capped the drive with a 31-yard run. The Leopards again failed to make the two-point conversion.

Grant Schoenrock used a seven-yard run to score a second Knights touchdown. LaCrosse kept Nate Windholz out of the end zone to leave the score at 14 to 12.

In the second quarter, Windholz found the endzone with a 46-yard rush on first and ten. Seth Schwein pulled in a pass from Grant Schoenrock to make it 22 to 12 over the Leopards.

After a three and out, LaCrosse’s Colby Stull intercepted a Schoenrock pass. The Leopards could not convert on the takeaway.

On Victoria’s first play of their next series, they fumbled the ball. Brodie Schmidt took the ball on the Victoria 13-yard line.

LaCrosse struck quickly as Bryce Conner immediately threw a touchdown pass to an open Gage Burk. Conner would run in the ball to narrow the Victoria lead to 22 to 20.

Neither team would score again in the first half.

Victoria received the ball to start the second half. Nate Windholz quickly found the end zone after three plays. He ran 34 yards to add another touchdown. Windholz also scored the two-point conversion.

Grant Schoenrock would score next with a 32-yard run on third and one.

Victoria’s next score came from LaCrosse. Quarterback Caden Morgen was sacked in the end zone to surrender a safety.

The Knights capped a dominant third quarter with a touchdown by Lane Schmidtberger. Schmidtberger ran in 14-yards to score the third touchdown of the quarter. Then Thaddeus Wohler added on the two-point conversion. Victoria scored a total of 24 points in the quarter.

Lane Schmidtberger added another touchdown with a 58-yard rush in the fourth quarter.

Colby Stull scored the final points of the night on a 47-yard pass reception from Caden Morgan.

Stull ran for the most yards on the night with 171. He scored one touchdown on the ground and another with his 47-yards of receiving.

Victoria’s Grant Schoenrock ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Carson Werth ran for 102 yards but did not score. Lane Schmidtberger and Nate Windholz both ran for 88 yards and scored two touchdowns.

“We executed well in the first half,” said LaCrosse Head Coach Jon Webster. “We had a few guys get banged up, and our lack of depth versus Victoria’s depth came through. Their guys got breaks, and we ran iron man.

“Colby is a big-time player for us, especially when we lost Bryce.”

“We knew LaCrosse was going to be well prepared,” said Victoria Head Coach Doug Oberle. “They were super physical. Our numbers wore them down quickly.”
