Top seed West falls to Free State in 6A baseball regional final
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Lawrence Free State and Wichita West faced off in the 6A regional baseball final which took place at Friends University field on Wednesday.
First inning, Plummer with the quick trigger to Gonzalez from behind the plate to pick off the runner at second. It remained a scoreless game.
Jake Roszak hit it right up the middle to short to get the out at second. Gonzalez then beamed it to Clemans at first for the double play to end that half of the inning.
Strong defensive performance as the Pioneers pick off another runner trying to steal second, that would close the inning and keep two goose eggs up on the scoreboard.
The ball is hit up the middle by the Firebirds and a nice diving catch by West’s Townsley to keep the runner at second.
It was a defensive battle by both teams till the end of the fifth inning. Gonzalez popped up to shallow right. The Firebird went for the diving catch but misjudged the ball and it just missed his glove. Ridpath came in to score as the pinch runner for Hembree to give West the 1-0 lead.
Free State had an explosive seventh inning, scoring three runs which put them ahead 3-1 over West and ended up winning them the game. Free State advances to the state tournament by beating top seed Wichita West.
