CIK Boys Track Tracker: Week Six
Into the final stretch we go as track and field athletes around the state head to league championships this week and regional meets the next. Then the season ends with the modified state meet in Wichita.
Lots of top times emerged out of the giant Shawnee Mission Relays Friday, including the top-three 1600m times in the state this year. Olathe South’s Riley Vandaveer cut six seconds, moving to 4:12.98 to expand on his state lead, which is now three seconds. Augusta’s Sawyer Schmidt shaved 20 seconds from his 4A lead in the 3200m with the win in 9:17.80. He now leads the class by 21 seconds.
Southeast of Saline (3A) ran an impressive 8:06.30 4x800 in a virtually uncontested Ellinwood meet. With competition at the SM North Relays, St. Thomas Aquinas (5A) became the first 4x800 team in Kansas this spring to crack eight minutes in 7:58.76.
Still at SM North, two class leaders were set in the triple jump but Santa Fe Trail’s Brett Schwartz added nearly seven feet to his state lead in the discus at 190-6.
