Northwest opens baseball season versus Olathe East
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - High school baseball season is just beginning, having been nearly two years since a lot of these players and coaches last played together.
Their season was cancelled last year due to COVID and now teams are taking the diamond again, like Northwest High School Friday.
Northwest baseball coach Chris Lambert said, “Just to get outside after a long time off, sun was shining. There’s good enthusiasm, players are ready. Been waiting for a long time for this, to get back on the field. The environment was great, the fans were great.”
Northwest senior Brendon Green said, “I’m just glad to be out here for my senior season. Losing that junior season was honestly pretty heartbreaking.
“The seniors now lost that junior year last year and we’ve got seven of them. So everyone understands the importance of playing and what we have to do in order to make that happen,” said Lambert.
“Everyone had good energy, everyone was hyped. It feels good to be back out here, even though we played in the offseason during summer, it feels real good to be out here representing our high school,” said Northwest senior Justice Hannon.
Teams are learning a lot about what they need to clean up heading into the rest of the season.
Green said, “I think everyone on this team has done something in the off season, so we’re all pretty fine-tuned. It just in practice we’ve got to get certain things fixed up and we should be good.”
Northwest lost to Olathe East 5-0 in its season opener.
