WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - In the last 2A state title game, Garden Plain defeated Sterling in 2019 to become state champs. So the semifinal game this year between the two schools...was a rematch that the Black Bears had been hoping for, for the last 733 days. Sterling beat Garden Plain 69-52.

Sterling head coach Jill Rowland said, “This is really a core of the same kids, we had a nice run two years ago when we met Garden Plain in the championship game. So last year was very disappointing, we came out and they just owned us, they beat us and we played poorly and they deserved to win that game.”

“Tonight was a good night because we obviously haven’t like beat them in a while and this is our third year here and we’re finally beating them and we just came in get it done,” said Sterling junior, Bennie Horsch.

It’s been in our heads and they’re great competitors, they’re a great team, coached very well and so it’s a very important win for our program to be able to beat Garden Plain,” said Rowland.

“At least we get some finality this year, I’d rather have some sort of finality than left in limbo,” said Kody Kasselman, Garden Plain’s head coach.

Horsch said, “We were like that for my freshman year and now I think we’re really set to get it done this year.”

Top seed Sterling now has its sights set on winning a state championship in less than 24 hours against Colgan.
