McPherson falls to Bishop Miege in 4A semifinals
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - McPherson boys started out on track with top seed Bishop Miege (20-1) in the semifinals of the 4A State Basketball tournament, but quickly fell behind, ultimately losing 78-51.
The Bullpups (13-10) came into the semifinals off an upset over Buhler in the quarterfinals and were ranked fourth in this matchup against the Stags. By halftime on Thursday, McPherson trailed Miege 40-20. The strong Stags defense kept the Pups from really driving to the basket and left them shooting less than 45 percent from the field, while Miege hit over 62 percent of its field goals.
Miege also drew more contact and got to the line almost 20 times more than McPherson who only made 4-8 free throws. Miege also outperformed McPherson on the boards. The Stags totaled 27 total rebounds compared to the Pups 19.
The leading scorer for the Bullpups was Jayton Alexander with 16 points, 14 of which were scored in the second half. Seth Madron followed Alexander up with 14 points to be the only Pups in double digits.
On Saturday at 2 p.m. in Salina, Bishop Miege will face the winner of the Augusta/ Louisburg semifinal game.
