Campus advances to 6A State Tournament
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Campus Colts find themselves one step closer to settling some unfinished business at the 6A state tournament after winning a sub-state championship 77-53 over Derby.
The Panthers opened the game on a roll, leaving Campus scoreless minutes into the first quarter. Jump-starting that effort was Junior Fontaine Williams, mixing savvy drives to the lane with outside shots to open the game. Williams paced the Panthers, scoring five of his 14 points in the first quarter. Derby opened the game on a 6-0 run before Campus regained the lead.
Campus saw a hot start from Sophomore Zion Young catapult them into competition. Young started for the Colts and made an immediate impact in the first half. The second half in particular was where Young found rhythm, scoring nine of his total 14.
The halftime deficit would be impossible for the Panthers to overcome but they would make a solid attempt. Jameer Clemons was instrumental in that run from the point guard position, finding his way to the line in the third quarter and finishing under the basket.
Stevie Strong scored a game-high 20 points followed by Sterling Chapman with 19 for Campus. Fontaine Williams finished with 14 points for the Panthers. Jameer Clemons and Isaac Ray would follow with 11 and 10, respectively.
Campus advances to take on Hutchinson in the first round of the state tournament.
