Rising Star: Haley Sparks from Valley Center
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - After losing her junior soccer season due to COVID-19 canceling spring sports, Valley Center forward, Haley Sparks was looking to make up for lost time on the field this year and help the Hornets get back to a regional championship.
As a sophomore, Haley Sparks was first team All-State. Switching from playing forward her freshman year to mid-field her sophomore year, Sparks has nearly 40 career goals. But she said missing her junior season won’t help her break the school record of 61 career goals.
Valley Center coach Matt Coleman said it’s Spark’s willingness to do whatever the team needs of her in order to win, that really makes her a leader on this Hornets team.
Senior Haley Sparks said, “I come out here sometimes and practice just working on placement mostly. I have the power to get it into the net really good but just the placement. But I think it’s really improved since freshman year. So that’s good.”
“She’s a very talented player and I think she is just now starting to get really confident in what she can do,” said Valley Center coach Matt Coleman. “As a freshman she scored 20 some goals and she was worried about how well she was playing. So seeing her confidence start to grow and catch up and match her ability, I think she’s going to be a really good player for us this year.”
Sparks played with her club team over the last two years to stay sharp for her senior season. She will continue playing soccer at Emporia State next year.
