Campus’ strong second half earns AVCTL-D1 title
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - With a strong showing from both teams, the atmosphere inside of Campus High School was set for a Friday night showdown. The action on the court equaled that of the cheers as Campus beat Maize South 80-66, earning a second straight league title.
The Mavericks opened the game on an 11-2 run hitting multiple shots from the perimeter and outworking the Colts on the defensive glass. Javan Buchanan scored the first eight points for Maize South, finishing with 13 in the first quarter. The Mavericks were able to move the ball at will on offense in the early going. Isaiah Atwater set the table for multiple looks under the basket as well as from three-point range.
Campus wouldn’t stay down long.
A run sparked by a Jayden Hall steal would see new life come from the Colts. Stevie Strong and Sterling Chapman each traded three-pointers in the first quarter, while Andrell Burton handled the post game for the Colts. Chapman, once again cemented himself in the Campus record books breaking the all-time rebounding record in the the game. The Colts would dwindle the lead, ultimately regaining grasp of the game at halftime.
Sterling Chapman clocked in with the most points on the game, scoring 25 on the night. Stevie Strong would follow up with 16, while Andrell Burton had 15.
Javan Buchanan had the hot hand for the Mavericks, ending the night with 20 points to his credit. Isaiah Atwater finished with 15.
