Hoisington girls use free throw line to get by Lyons
HOISINGTON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Forty-four fouls and some offensive struggles. The Hoisington girls made the most of it on Homecoming night, scoring 21 points from the free throw line to hold off Lyons 50-39 in a Central Kansas League battle.
“It was difficult to get into any kind of rhythm,” said Hoisington coach Mandy Mason. “Plus every time I turned around someone had three fouls or four fouls. It was constantly trying to get someone in who wasn’t in foul trouble.”
The Lady Cardinals never trailed in the game, leading 25-13 at the half and adding a point to the lead when a Jaci Guthrie offensive board led to free throws midway through the third. Lyons battled back with five-straight points from junior Kayleigh Arriola to get as close as 34-27 by the end of the frame.
Hoisington pushed the lead back to double figures, first with free throws from junior Macy Hanzlick, then a shot off the glass from junior Livvy Brewer. The Lady Lions fought back one more time, whittling the deficit to 41-36 on a 3-pointer from sophomore Caitlyn Belote with 5:18 remaining.
The Lady Cardinals closed the door with a long possession that ended with a Hanzlick assist to Guthrie. Hanzlick added a basket, then Guthrie converted on a pair of free throws and a 3-point play with 37 ticks left for Hoisington’s final points of the night. The senior Guthrie, who was later named Homecoming Queen, finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
“She shot the ball extremely well from the free throw line,” Mason said. “She has nights where she hits shots. Tonight she came up huge. It was a tight game and we needed our free throws. We shot the ball really well from the free throw line tonight overall as a team. That was a big factor in the outcome of the game.”
Hanzlick was the main force early on. Hoisington made just one of its 11 field goal attempts in the opening quarter but Hanzlick put in five free throws and grabbed six rebounds in the quarter. She finished with 14 points, nine boards, and four blocked shots. Sophomore Addy Mason hit threes in three of the quarters and scored six points in the second quarter to finish with 12 points. Senior Suzanna Schneider scored all seven of her points in the second quarter and also grabbed seven boards.
Belote scored five points in the fourth to lead Lyons with 12 points. She also grabbed six rebounds. Yamyle Ramirez, Janessa Jaime, and Arriola each added six points.
