Dodge City boys take down Great Bend, 63-36
GREAT BEND, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Dodge City Demons withstood a second-quarter surge from the Great Bend Panthers to win 63 to 36.
The Western Athletic Conference game marked the last regular-season home game for Great Bend.
Dodge City quickly took control of the game with an 11 to 0 run in the first quarter. The Panthers scored their first basket near the midway mark of the quarter. They trailed 19 to 7 going into the second quarter.
The Panthers would claw into the Demon led and narrowed it to five points near the middle of the second quarter. Dodge City then rebuilt their lead to 29 to 19 at the halftime break.
A rested Red Demon team scored 21 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach from Great Bend.
Dodge City held Great Bend to 17 points total in the second half. The Demons, in turn, scored 34.
“The start is huge, especially in a game you are expected to win,” said Dodge City Head Coach Shane Traughber. “Great Bend is a solid team with three skilled big guys. Cooper Scheck’s threes at the beginning of the game gave us the energy that carried us through.”
Aidan Sowers led all scorers with 12 points. Cooper Scheck added 11 points, including going three of seven from behind the arc.
Cal Dunekack led Great Bend with 11 points.
Both teams will play tomorrow as Great Bend travels to Liberal. Dodge City will host Maize South in an afternoon game.
