McPherson girls out hustle Derby to edge out win
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - McPherson girls basketball has handed Derby it’s second loss this season in a close game that came down to a couple of final second free throws. The bullpups say they’ve never faced a team with the Panthers height and that’s what they prepared for leading up to this game in order to pull out the 38-36 win.
McPherson senior Kassidy Beam said, “We spent all week scouting really well on Brown, Cobbins their point guard just because they have three 6′3′' girls, they’re a loaded team.”
McPherson head girls’ basketball coach Chris Strathman said, “Three girls that are 6′3′'that definitely creates some unique challenges, you just don’t see that very often.”
“Yeah we knew they were going to be tall going into it,” said McPherson junior Lauren Labertew. “I think our win over Dodge City really helped us, just with our confidence. We knew that we were just going to have to battle our butts off because they had the size advantage but that didn’t seem to stop us tonight.”
“They made a run on us third quarter, but I thought we just stayed, we battled, and we played as a team to get this team win,” said Beam.
“They just competed like crazy, that was a very tough gut-wrenching game, just gutted out possession by possession,” said Strathman. “And then Lauren Labertew, knocked two free throws down with five or six seconds left or whatever it was. Nothing but net.”
“Yeah I try not to look at the score and just think, me and the goal, just knock them both down and just put them both in and battle our butts off,” said Labertew.
Derby has lost only 11 games in the last five years and McPherson accounts for five of those losses. The Pups advance to 11-2 on the season.
