Rising Star: Devon Junghans leading Salina South in historic season
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - At 11-0 and ranked second in the state in Class 5A, Salina South boys basketball is having one of the best seasons in program history.
The Cougars have a veteran group, led by senior point guard Devon Junghans.
“It feels really great because all of us have worked hard for this moment,” Junghans said.
Junghans averages 13 points a night and shoots a team-high 44 percent from the three.
“He is a huge part of our team and has been starting since he was a freshman,” Salina South Head Coach Jason Hooper said. “He’s one of our floor generals. He’s the kid you look for when we need to hit a big shot or a big three and he comes through in that clutch moment all the time.”
Junghans also leads the Cougars in assists and steals this season, but wants to leave an even bigger mark on the program.
“A big motivation factor for me is just looking back at the history and history shows we have never won a state title for basketball and that’s what motivates me,” he said.
Salina South has a tough stretch ahead of them, but believe they have what it takes to bring home the program’s first title.
“It would mean a ton to me, I love the people here so much and I love the school so much,” Junghans said. “The only way to go out would be to give this school a state title and something to be proud about.”
