Salina South tops city rival Salina Central 66-53
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) -The Salina South Cougars girls basketball team uses a fast first quarter to propel them over cross-town rival Salina Central, winning 66-53.
A 19-2 start to the game reflected the sharp shooting effort from the Cougars and a handful of steals on the defensive side of the ball. Aggressive ball movement from Salina South would create open opportunities for points.
The guard play on display from Salina South helped carve out most of the points on the night. Junior guards Kylie Arnold and Sydney Peterson attacked the Mustang defense only to find their open teammate under the basket or on the perimeter.
The Mustangs would mount a second half comeback attempt, opening the half in a full court press in which they found success. As the game went on, the Cougars would go on to dissect the pressure and score points in their half court sets or on quick opportunities.
Kylie Arnold scored a team-high 14 points, followed by Acacia Weis with 13 and Sydney Patterson adding 12.
Aubrie Kierscht led the Mustangs with a game-high 15 points including a three-point basket to beat the buzzer before half time. Mykayla Cunningham would pace Kierscht’s effort with 14 of ther own, followed by Landry Stewart with 10.
