LYONS, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Lyons Lions defeated the Ellinwood Eagles 53 to 45 in a non-league matchup.

Ellinwood came into the game on short rest after winning against Central Plains 69 to 48 the night before.

Both teams started with strong defenses.  They kept either side from scoring until halfway through the first quarter.  Cade Crawford opened the scoring with a three-pointer for Lyons.

Ellinwood tried to counter, but they only mustered six points in the first quarter.  Lyons led 14 to 6 going into the second quarter.

The Eagles scored 13 to Lyons’ 10 points in the second quarter.  Britton Dutton scored the first of his four threes on the night in the quarter.

Despite outscoring Lyons, Ellinwood still trailed 24 to 19 at halftime.

Lyons maintained their lead in the second half.  In the fourth quarter, the advantage grew to 16 points.  Late in the game, Britton Dutton sank three three-pointers to narrow the score to 53 to 45 at the end.

“This was a super coming out party for Billy Harley,” said Lyons Head Coach Brian Friess.  Harley led all scorers with 22 points on the night.  “He gives us another player that opponents have to take into account.

“I’m just happy with our team.  Ellinwood is a really good team that is loaded, and our guards matched them all night.”

Trey McClure added 10 points to the Lyons total.  The Lions also went eight of nine from the free-throw line.

“We’ve got a little bit better handling adversity.  We did not let the bottom fall out,” said Ellinwood Head Coach Derek Joiner.  “We had some wild possessions with some bad shots or turnovers.  Hopefully, we can solve those problems before we get to the Sub-State tournament.”

Ellinwood’s Britton Dutton ended the night with 20 points, including four three-pointers.  Parker Scheck followed closely with 18 points.
