Ellinwood girls top Lyons, 49-39
LYONS, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Ellinwood Lady Eagles defeated the Lyons Lady Lions 49 to 39 in a non-league matchup.
The Friday night game was the second in two days for both teams. Both sides lost their Thursday games. Lyons fell 56 to 18 to Hillsboro, while Ellinwood lost 77 to 43 to Central Plains.
Lyons built a 9 to 7 lead about midway through the first quarter. After that point, Ellinwood’s Bella Baker scored a basket. Brittany Simpson quickly followed with a three-pointer to give the Lady Eagles a 13 to 9 advantage.
The Lady Lyons trailed 13 to 11 at the end of the first quarter. They added ten points in the second quarter. Ellinwood countered with twelve points, including three’s by Mya Maxwell and Mary Dimitt, to lead 25 to 21 at halftime.
Ellinwood came out of the break and tried to build on the lead. Instead, Lyons hung around. Midway through the third quarter, Lyons forced two turnovers on the Lady Eagles. The Lady Lions scored four points on the turnovers to tie the game at 26 all.
Head Coach Andrew Cherry of Ellinwood immediately called for a full timeout. When the Lady Eagles retook the floor, the ball found its way to Mya Maxwell, who buried another three-pointer.
Going into the final minute of the game, Ellinwood led by 14 points. Lyons scored four points on two baskets in the last minute to narrow the score to 49 to 39.
“We were excited to play and forced some things early,” said Ellinwood Head Coach Andrew Cherry. “Mya always comes up strong, and she shot well today.”
Ellinwood’s Mya Maxwell led all scorers with 16 points. Twelve of her points came from behind the three-point line. Daphne Doll added 12 points to the Lady Eagle total.
Janessa Jamie led the Lady Lions with 11 points. Kayleigh Arriola followed right behind with 10 points.
