Hugoton pulls away from Hutch Trinity, wins SIT
STERLING, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The third and fourth-seeded teams met to decide the Champion of the 49th Annual Sterling Invitational Tournament. After a back and forth first half, the Hugoton Eagles defeated the Trinity Celtics 73 to 60.
Hutchinson Trinity entered the tournament as the fourth seed with a three and three record. Hugoton’s four wins and two losses gave them the third seed.
Trinity scored first, only to be equaled by Hugoton on the next possession.
The two teams would trade the lead back and forth for all of the first half. A total of nine lead changes occurred during the early quarters.
In the last minute of the second quarter, Hugoton went on a seven-point run to close out the half. They took a 36 to 30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Hugoton built a seven-point lead early in the third quarter. Trinity would narrow the advantage to four points. Hugoton then took full control of the game.
At the 3:50 mark in the fourth quarter, Hugoton extended the lead to 19 points. Trinity would trim the margin, but they never regained the lead.
The win marked Hugoton’s third SIT Championship since 2016.
Sawyer Harper led all scorers with 24 points. Jayce Korf followed with 21 points. Ryle Riddlesperger contributed 16 points to the total.
Lucas Hammeke led Trinity scorers with 22 points. Evan Remar added 16 points to the total.
