Rising Star: Andover Central wrestler Xara Bacci
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Girls wrestling state runner up last year, Andover Central’s Xara Bacci is looking for another shot at a state title match.
After getting pinned in the finals last season, she carries that motivation into her junior year.
“My goal is to get back to state, get back to the finals, do the best I can,” said Andover Central junior Xara Bacci.
Bacci has been wrestling for four years. Family friends and her brother who all wrestled, piqued her interest to pick up the sport.
“My first year I won the novice championship against all guys. There’s a tournament in Oklahoma, JOC, that I won, well I got first in girls and second in guys,” said Bacci.
With only two duals and one tournament under her belt this season, Bacci said she’s a little behind with a 3-2 record.
Andover Central’s wrestling coach Nate Alvarez said, “She got quarantined so we missed quite a bit of time there. Where now, it’s just getting back in shape. Now it’s believing, getting in that predator mindset. Once she really starts pushing that, I don’t think a girl will touch her.”
“Recently it’s been more offense, I’ll shoot more. It used to be more defense, like reserved, wait till they shoot and then do it,” said Bacci. “Once I step on the mat, my entire demeanor changes, it’s just locked and loaded, you’ve got to go right off the bat.”
Bacci’s high school record is 35-5 over the last season and a half. She’s ranked second in the division one 138 weight class across the state.
Alvarez said, “She’s leaving her legacy actually, leaving that mark. We need to get her name up on our wall and this year we’re hoping to get that state champion next to it. That way so those girls coming up, they see that and be like, ‘Hey I want to be just like Xara. I want my name right under her name.’
