WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - In the first game of the January Jam tournament, Maize and Northwest went head to head. The Eagles would come out with the 13-point win over the Grizzlies, 76-63.

The Eagles secret was driving to the basket where they got about 93 percent of their points. They only hit two of eleven 3-point shots. Maize’s leading scorer was Avery Johnson with 18 points, followed by Kyle Grill with 17 points and Jacob Hanna with 16.

Maize had two blocks and seven steals compared to Northwest’s eight steals. As a team, the Eagles were 18 for 28 from the line and the Grizzlies were 8 for 16.

Northwest’s leading scorer was Braydon Verbeck with 16 and two teammates following him up with eleven points, Demarcus Hoover and Tasean Williams. While the Grizzlies hit more threes than the Eagles, knocking down seven, they hit less than 42 percent from the field. Kept trying to push the perimeter shooting when only 26 percent were falling. Northwest put up nearly half of it’s total points in the fourth quarter alone.

Maize will play Heights on Friday night and Northwest will face North on Friday.
