Dodge City holds off Liberal 45-36

DODGE CITY, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Dodge City Lady Demons defeated the Liberal Lady Redskins 45 to 36 for this season’s first Western Athletic Conference victory.

The two teams entered the game ranked in Class 6A. Dodge City with the number eight rank and the Lady Redskins coming in number ten.

The 7 and 0 Lady Demons were hosting its first WAC game. Liberal played Garden City on Tuesday and came away with their first loss of the year.

Liberal scored the first two points of the game from the free-throw line. Dodge City quickly tied it up. The score would seesaw back and forth through the quarter. At the horn, the Lady Redskins led 14 to 13.

The Lady Demon defense stepped up in the second quarter. They only allowed Liberal five points. In turn, they poured on 14 points, including two three-pointers. At halftime, Dodge City led 27 to 19.

In the second half, Dodge City stretched their lead to 15 points before Liberal began to claw back. The Lady Redskins went 6 of 11 from the free-throw line in the second half as part of their combined 17 points for the last two quarters.

Dodge City only scored 18 points in the third and fourth quarter combined. The Lady Demons made 11 of 15 free throws to help seal their eighth win of the season.

The win also marked Dodge City Head Coach Kelley Snodgrass’s 100th victory in charge of the Lady Demons.

“This is a huge win. The girls played so hard and wanted it,” said Coach Snodgrass. “This was our first game in the WAC against one of the toughest opponents we will face.”

“A bunch of little things led to the loss,” said Liberal Head Coach Brandi Fowler. “We left some shooters open. We might not be the biggest team in the state, but we have a lot of heart and were going to play hard every game.”

Camree Johnson of Dodge City led all scorers with 18 points. Kisa Unruh followed with 10 points.

Aubry Warden led the Lady Redskins with 13 points. Ashley Carrillo added 10 points.
