Early lead gives Maize girls the win over Heights
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A matchup of two of the top girls teams in the Wichita area, Maize and Heights. The Eagles got out to a narrow lead in the first quarter and were able to hold onto it until the end of the game, beating the Falcons 60-56.
It was a team effort on both sides with both benches contributing as key players were covered. Despite a tough Maize defense, Cayanna Stanley was still able to shine from the three-point line. Stanley helped the Falcons to come back from an eleven point deficit to trail by three in the final minute of the game.
Fouls plagued both teams but especially Heights as many of the Eagles points came from the free-throw line. Maize’s Sydney Holmes was the steady, leading force on the court for the Eagles along with Kyla Frenchers who had success driving the lane. While dominant in the paint, Baylee Miller also allowed Maize several second chance points even though Heights’ aggressiveness on the boards.
Maize will next face Derby on January 22nd. Heights will host Bishop Carroll on January 15th.
