WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - After a two week break, Northwest (4-1) started 2021 with an impressive 61-55 win over East (3-2), handing the Blue Aces its first loss in the City League. The Grizzlies are off to its best start since the 2011-2012 season.

“I’m really proud of them, especially with the way the game was going early. It was kind of a grind for us and things weren’t going well,” Northwest Head Coach Andy Hill said. “We got down seven in the third quarter but they just stick with it and stayed together and played together. No one tried to be a hero and we finally started to get some stops and scores on the other end.”

In his first game back this season after recovering from a hand injury, senior David Duncan led the Grizzlies with 15 points.

“I’ve been waiting for my senior year forever, I was really excited to be out here and it was a great win,” said Duncan. “I’m really proud, we got down seven in the third quarter and just stuck with it and got a big win.”

“It was great to have David back, he does so much for us from a versatility standpoint,” Hill said. “He can rebound, he can guard all spots on the floor and did a great job attacking the basket tonight.”

Northwest trailed by as many as seven, but rallied back behind a total team effort in which all nine players scored.

“They believe in themselves, we knew that if we could hang around and not let them get too far away that some shots would start falling,” Hill said. “We changed some things up defensively in the third and I think that helped us as well. We did a better job rebounding down the stretch and found a way.”

Daylan Jones led East with 20 points, while AJ king finished with 11.

Northwest will face Bishop Carroll (3-2) on the road on Tuesday. East will take on Heights (3-2) at home on Tuesday.
