ST. JOHN, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Hesston Swathers rode a dominant first half to defeat the St. John Tigers 57 to 29 in the last game of 2020 for the teams.

Hesston came into the game with the number one ranking in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.  St. John received the number four ranking for Class 1A Division I.

The Swathers quickly scored and set the tone for the first half with a smothering full-court press.   The Swather defense only allowed seven points in the first quarter.  Brayden Schilling would score 10 of his game total of 12 points in the first quarter.

At the end of the quarter, Hesston led 21 to 7.

In the second quarter, the Swather defense continued their handling of the Tigers.  They allowed only four points in the quarter.  The Hesston offense also showed up by adding 14 points to the total lead.

Going to the halftime break, Hesston led 35 to 11.

St. John’s defense started to create more opportunities in the second half.  They held the Swathers to only 22 points in the second half.  For the Tigers, their offense continued to not produce on the needed level.  St. John only scored 18 in the second half.

“This was a nice win for us going into the extended Christmas break,” said Swather Head Coach Greg Raliegh.  “We did a good job on the press.  Especially Brayden Schilling, he always seems to have his hand on the ball.”

“We have one of the hardest schedules in Class 1A this year.  We play Hesston, Sterling, and a couple of other 3A teams,” said St. John Head Coach Dan Hilton.  “We played badly in stretches tonight, but we also played well in stretches too.  If we played some of our other games as hard as tonight, the result would be different.”

Cason Richardson and Nick Arnold led all scorers with 13 points for Hesston.  Brayden Schilling scored 12.

Uriel Calleros led St. John with 12 points.
