ANDOVER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A team known for its shooting prowess, Andover Central turned to their defense in leading them past Salina Central Thursday to remain unbeaten entering winter break.

The Jaguars forced 20 turnovers in the game to keep the Mustangs at bay, hitting foul shots down the line to close out their 4th win of the season, 60-52, their third win over a ranked opponent to start out the season.

Bailey Wilborn led the Jaguars with 17 points, 8 coming in the first quarter as the Jags forced a pair of first half Mustang timeouts, the second after the lead less than halfway into the second jumped to 24-13. But something in that break changed things for Salina Central, as they held the Jags scoreless for the final 4:30 of the half, scoring 10 unanswered to cut the halftime deficit to only one.

The Mustangs grabbed an early second half lead before the Jags jumped back on top 34-28, but again that lead was short lived. Salina Central rallied off 7 in a row capped by Aubrie Kierscht’s lone three of the day. The momentum kept going to to take a 42-38 lead, but this time it was the Jags that went on a run that ultimately proved to be too much. Brittany Harshaw and Ellie Stearns hit big threes, and Maddie Amekporfer commanded the post for a pair of buckets under the hoop.

Wilborn’s 17 included three of the seven made threes for the Jaguars, all deep balls coming in the first half. Stearns finished with 14, while Harshaw and Amekporfor added 12 apiece. 10 of Harshaw’s 12 came after the break. Kierscht paced the Mustangs with 17, while Hampton Williams added 10.

Both teams will return to action on January 8, with Andover Central visiting Goddard and Salina Central hosting Andover.
