WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - It’s unsure whether this is the first KSHSAA sanctioned outdoor high school wrestling dual...but it’s the first for the Wichita area. Bishop Carroll hosting rival Northwest under the football stadium lights. And it all started as a joke.

“Yeah the dual got canceled and my athletic director called me and asked if we wanted to host a dual,” said Bishop Carroll head wrestling coach Kyle Cline. “Five minutes later I texted him just kind of jokingly said, ‘Hey why don’t we do it on the football field?’ And thirty seconds later he goes, ‘Yeah let’s do it.’”

Normally friends and family wouldn’t be able to attend the dual happened if it was inside their wrestling room because of COVID restrictions.

Northwest head wrestling coach Ron Russell said, “I wish I would have come up with this idea. There has been so many challenges this year with COVID, there’s been so many challenges with different things that this gives the kids a chance to do something unique.” With all of the uncertainty surrounding this winter sports season, these wrestlers say they’re just grateful to be able to get on the mats and compete this season.

Bishop Carroll won the dual over Northwest.
