Maize South storms back to top Andover Central

MAIZE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - After falling behind by as much as 9 in the second quarter, Maize South came back after halftime to top Andover Central 49-46 in Joe Jackson’s first game as Maverick head coach.

A former state champion at Wichita East, Jackson made the move to coach the Maize South program in the offseason.

After a back and forth start, Central put together a 9-0 run to take a 16-9 advantage early in the second quarter. The lead sat at 7 at the break, a 25-18 deficit for the Mavs.

But something clicked after the break, the Mavs stormed out to score the next ten points and take a 28-25 lead.

That lead grew to as many as 12 in the fourth, before the Mavericks withstood a late comeback to take it 49-46.

Byron Fitchpatrick, on the day he announced a commitment to play football at William Jewell, paced the Mavs with 13 off the bench. Owen Clyne added 9, while Quincy Gholar came through in the clutch to score all 8 of his points in the fourth quarter. Brian Perry put in 13 to lead the Jaguars, with Skylar Clevenger adding 10.

Both teams will next play in the AVCTL/GWAL Challenge on Saturday, with Maize South meeting Northwest and Andover Central taking on South.
