WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The first three-peat in program history for Derby; beating Blue Valley North by 25 points to earn another 6A State Title. But the Panthers said this championship means more than the rest.

Derby senior wide receiver Reid Liston said, “Senior year, all the COVID stuff, having two games canceled because of COVID, it’s just been a weird year. So this one is definitely extra sweet.”

Derby head coach Brandon Clark said, “We talked about last night about all three phases coming together and intertwining with each other. Our offense was scoring early and keeping us in the game and then once our defense found their rhythm then it all started clicking. So nobody was blaming anybody, nobody was arguing with each other, they all still believed and then it started to happen.”

Derby senior quarterback Lem Wash said, “It’s been so special because there’s been ups and downs. It wasn’t like the past years where everything was just sky high. This year we had ups and downs, so much adversity with COVID and all that and for us to just come back and do what we did, it’s very special.”

“I have a great group of kids under me that I got to play with and it’s just a blessing to see them grow and I hope they come here next year,” said Derby senior safety Tanner Knox.

“This is honestly a sad day, this is the last time we’re going to be able to coach these seniors up and they’ve been so mature this whole season and just made it such a fun season,” said Clark. “I’m going to miss coming to practice and playing games with them.”

As the toughest, most inconsistent season they’ve experienced so far, the Panthers said the unwavering support from the Derby community helped them win this championship.
