Oakley blanks Smith Center to earn semifinal berth
SMITH CENTER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Playing a rematch of a game in which they fell 42-14 earlier in the season, the Oakley Plainsmen flipped the script to top Smith Center 20-0 on Friday night, earning a trip to the Class 1A Sub-State round.
Ethan Abell scored three rushing touchdowns and the defense did the rest of the work to come away with the road victory. They will play their third sub-state game in the school annals, previously reaching this point in 2009 and 2005--both seasons ended in losses to the Redmen.
The win, according to the Kansas Football History database, is the first in recorded history for Oakley over the Redmen. It’s a part of a turnaround year for head coach Jeff Hennick and Oakley, after four consecutive losing seasons and a 3-6 finish to 2019.
Smith Center’s season ends prior to the semifinal round for the first time since 2014. The Redmen had played in three consecutive state championship games prior to this season.
Up next for Oakley will be another rematch, this time facing Inman. The Teutons are coming off a 46-6 win over Conway Springs Friday and topped Oakley 39-13 during the regular season. The winner Friday night will earn a berth in the 1A Championship game to be held in Hays on November 28th.
