Derby flies by top ranked Lawrence
LAWRENCE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - In Derby’s first road playoff game since 2017, the Panthers looked right at home in its 40-20 win over Lawrence, ending the Chesty Lion’s undefeated season."
It’s been great to watch this team grow, we’ve had some ups and downs but the way they have handled all the adversity is incredible," said Derby Head Coach Brandon Clark. “Our main goal is to put the most mature team on the field emotionally, physically and spiritually and they have proven that the last three weeks.”
Derby Sophomore Dylan Edwards fumbled the opening kickoff, resulting in Lawrence capitalizing on the short field to go up 6-0, but that lead wouldn’t last long.
Edwards redeemed himself immediately with an 85-yard kickoff return to tie the game at 6 all early in the first quarter.
Derby would go on to score 40 unanswered points, Edwards leading the way with 3 touchdowns.
“We didn’t give up, we took those two losses and we elevated and grew from that,” said Edwards. “We are hungry for a state championship.”
With the win, Derby is back in the state semifinals for the sixth straight year and will take on Junction City (9-1) on the road next week with a trip the state championship on the line.
Lawrence ends its season with a 9-1 mark.
