Bishop Carroll hands Maize it’s second loss of the season
MAIZE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Bishop Carroll did something only one other team was able to do this football season and that’s beat Maize, by two touchdowns at that; 49-35.
Carroll’s defense was able to contain the Eagle’s running threat and Maize made some mistakes that added up to a loss.
Bishop Carroll head coach Dusty Trail said, “We were just trying to contain those guys, keep them running laterally and instead of down the field and to a degree, I think we did a pretty good job of that tonight.”
Senior defensive back Cade Gatschet said, “We were pretty slow at the start and then obviously big plays at the end changed the momentum.”
“The last two years we’ve lost in the quarterfinals and they didn’t want that to happen, especially the seniors, they didn’t want that happening again,” said Trail.
“We’re excited, we haven’t beat them in three years so we’re excited for that,” said Cade.
“That’s a rivalry game. Those guys know each other, they’ve grown up playing against each other and they wanted another shot at Northwest because Northwest has put it on us the last several years," said Trail. "So they’re excited for the opportunity.”
Bishop Carroll will face Northwest next Friday in the 5A Sub-State game.
Maize scored in it’s opening drive, Avery Johnson connected with Landon Helm in the end zone to go up 7-0.
Bishop Carroll answered, Aiden Niedens tossed it up to Matt Holthusen who was brought down around the five. Nieden kept it the next play and ran it in for the touchdown.
Carroll took the lead with a touchdown by Hunter Trail on the short run, 14-7.
And when one team scored, the other team answered right back. Johnson not liking what he saw so he kept it and took it 30 yards in to score, tied at 14.
Oscar Gallardo pulled the ball down in the end zone to regain the lead for the Golden Eagles 21-14, but not for long.
Justin Stephens with the nice catch, stumbled across the goal line.
Both teams were tied 28-28 at the half.
