HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A strong 5A matchup was held at Hutchinson Community College. The 6-2 Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles faced off with the 8-1 Hutchinson Salthawks.

The Golden Eagles didn’t waste any time getting to the end zone first. Hunter Trail drove into the end zone to put those first six points on the board.

But the Salthawks were quick to respond. Running back Alec McCuan had a big night.

He started it off with a drive into the end zone for the Salthawk’s first touchdown of the night 7-7 with 3:35 left in the first quarter.

The Eagles get the ball back.

Aiden Niedens launched the ball to Matt Holthusen who broke a tackle which brought the Eagles up 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, McCuan dove into the end zone again for his second touchdown of the night to tie the game up 14-14 with 4:54 left in the half.

On the last play of the half, the Golden Eagles force the Salthawks to a field goal inside the 10-yard line, and the Eagles' Cade Gatschet blocked the kick which allowed for the Eagles' Ryan Birch to pick it and run it all the way home! They brought the score to 21-14 at halftime. Bishop Carroll’s Coach Trial says this was a turning point for the Eagles.

After the half, the Salthawks weren’t going to give up easy. Just one minute into the third quarter they score to tie the game up again 21-21.

The Eagles respond with two more touchdowns in the second half to gain a two touchdown lead. The Eagles led 35-21 with 10:21 left in the fourth quarter.

They manage to finish the game strong and beat the Salthawks with a score 42-28 to head to the 5A quarterfinals. They’re now 7-2.
